Class – VI
Chapter – 3 Classification of Materials
Grouping similar things is called classification
Classification is necessary in order to:-
- Have a systematic knowledge of things
- · Have a general idea about all the members of a group, and
- Know how the members of a group differ from those of the group
Classification of materials on
their properties
Floating and Sinking in Water
Lustre
Lustrous materials :- Materials that shines are
called lustrous materials.
Ex.- All metals and metallic objects
Non-lustrous Materials :- Materials which do not
shine is called non-lustrous material.
Ex.-All non-metal and non-metallic objects
If metal objects lose their luster on exploring in air
then it called tarnished material.
Smoothness
of the surface
- Smooth surface
- Rough surface
Transparency
Transparent materials :- Materials that allow
most of the light to pass through them is known as transparent material or
object.
Opaque Materials :- Materials that do not
allow light to pass through them is known as opaque material or object.
Translucent Materials :- Materials that allow some
of the light to pass through them is known as translucent material or object.
Hardness
Material which can’t be compressed or cut easily.
Ductility
and malleability
Ductile Materials:- A Solid Materials
which can be bent or can change its shape.
Malleable Materials:- A Solid Materials which
can be bent or can change its shape.
Brittle Materials:- A Solid Materials that
brakes on being bent, beaten, pressed.
Solubility
Soluble Material :- Solid materials which can
be dissolved in water is called soluble material.(Homogeneous Mixture)
Insoluble Material :- Solid materials which
can’t dissolve in water is called insoluble material.
Miscible Materials :- Liquids which can mix in
water to make solution is called miscible materials.
Ex.- Glycerin and Shampoo
Im-miscible Materials :- Liquids which cannot
mix in water to form solution is called Immiscible Materials.
Ex.- Edible Oil or Kerosene
Solvent :- A liquid that dissolve other
substances.
Solute :- The substance that dissolves.
Solution :- The mixture of solute and
solvent.
Ability
to conduct heat
Conductor :- Materials through which heat can flow
easily is called good conductor of heat or conductor.
Insulator :- Materials through which heat cannot flow
easily is called poor or bad conductor of heat or insulator.
Magnetic
Property
Magnetic Materials :- Materials that can attract by
magnet.
Non- Magnetic Materials :- Materials which is not
attract by magnet.
Conductor
of Electricity
Science Notes Class 6
Conductor (Good Conductor):- Materials which can
conduct electricity or which allow electric current to pass through them.
Insulator (Bad Conductor):- Materials which can’t
conduct electricity or which don’t allow electric current to pass through them.
Combustibility
Combustible :- Materials that can be burnt in air is
known as combustible materials.
Non-Combustible:- Materials that can’t burn in air is
known as non-combustible materials.
